Acupuncture

A WLO patient undergoing acupuncture treatment.

Warriors Live On has partnered with Eight Elements Westan integrative clinic and somatic training center in San Diego that supports WLO’s mission to help combat veterans cope with post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), because of our shared belief that given the proper time, information and guidance, the body can heal itself naturally.

Pharmaceutical treatments for post-traumatic stress have been shown to have a small margin of effectiveness in the long-term care plan for many veterans. Many of these medications can lead to chemical dependence with devastating side effects.

The acupuncture program was incorporated into WLO protocol for post-911 veterans and veterans of combat as an alternative treatment for people suffering from PTSD and the many side effects that go along with that.

The body has a natural capacity to heal and correct itself; often we just need to guide and support it to have it release. The body in a trauma state can look very similar to a rope that has many knots in it. The knots as we all know will release much more effectively with some gentle guidance rather than sharp tugging.  All of the modalities and WLO have this shared common denominator, that often the body needs space and can heal itself naturally. Yoga, Organic Intelligence and bodywork all support the body in the same way. Space and time.

Acupuncture has been shown to be a safe, effective non-pharmacological therapy to help in the reduction of pain and aid in correcting sleep disorders.  Currently the Department of Defense, National Institute of Health and Veterans Affairs Administration are supporting research on the efficacy of acupuncture for the treatment of combat related pain and trauma.

When a Veteran arrives, standard protocols involves a one on one assessment to discuss chief complaints, take vitals, then on to treatment 30-45 min. Depending on the Veteran, Craniosacral maybe recommended.

What is Craniosacral Therapy?

Craniosacral therapy (CST) is a gentle-touch healing modality that works with the central nervous system (the brain and spinal cord) to enhance the body’s self-healing abilities.  It activates the parasympathetic nervous system (rest and digest) counteracting the symptoms of an overstimulated sympathetic nervous system (fight, flight, freeze response) that PTSD sufferers experience.

Craniosacral therapy creates a deep sense of relaxation, reducing symptoms like anxiety and depression.  CST compliments acupuncture, yoga, mindful movement and Organic Intelligence classes offered at Eight Elements West for Warriors Live On veterans by contributing to the goal of re-calibrating the nervous system and bringing the whole person back into balance – body, mind and emotions.

Community acupuncture is offered every Friday, 2:00 to 5:00 PM at Eight Elements. If you are interested in exploring the healing benefits of acupuncture, you can go here to sign up for a session now!
